About Self Publishing

I am sharing an article here that my son Nathan just recently wrote for his school about self publishing. I thought it to be very informative and helpful to anyone who may be considering writing, especially if they will be self publishing. Self publishing does take a bit of work to get something done well though, I have gone over my Psalms book several times and yet in my final copy I still have found an error. But I am not here to discourage you, but to encourage you in your passion for writing. If we can do it, you can too!!

 In Him, Mae

                                        Self Publishing  ( by N.C.R. )

There are around 1,000,000 books being published in the United States alone per a year, about half of which are being self published*. That is a big number and every year there are more and more writers wanting to publish their books. Maybe you are one of those people; a writer who wants to publish a book, and maybe you are looking into self publishing. I myself have self published over 5 books, and would like to share with you some pointers (that I learned) for self publishing your book, along with a few places you can self publish your book.

There is a vast world of ways and places to self publish your book, but regardless of how and where you self publish your book there are a few pointers that will always help you out. As a self publisher there are things you will have to do that other writers normally don’t have to do or worry about. If your book was to be published by a real publishing company you would not have to edit your book, make a table of contents, worry about copyright information or anything. But as a self publisher you are in control of the whole book and you are the one responsible to make sure that everything gets done.

The first step to getting a book published is the writing step. I write my stuff out on paper first then onto then onto the computer, but writing it on paper is not that necessary. Before typewriters were invented in 1867 you could send your writing to the publisher in your best handwriting. But since the invention of computers it has become a to must write your manuscript on them, from there you can print it off if necessary or do just about anything with it.

Copyrighting your books is a pretty big must, but is a pretty easy thing to do.

“When you create an original piece of writing, you automatically get certain property rights in that work. These rights are called "copyright" and automatically attach to certain works. If your work is copyrightable, it will be copyrighted as soon as it is "fixed." Nothing more needs to be done to gain the protections of the law. However, there may be certain reasons you want to register your copyright and formally protect it well into the future.”- http://www.wikihow.com/Copyright-Your-Writing-for-Free

Editing is fairly important. Some would say it is the most important part of your manuscript, but I would say that the only thing that really matters is that you are glorifying God through your writing. Still you should your best to edit your book as good as you can, and do not worry about the mistakes you did not fix, at least you did your best. As a self publisher I think you have more editing options than other types of writers. You can edit the book yourself, with a group of friends, or you could hire and editor. There are also many online writing sites where you could write your manuscript out and have it edited for free, actually I only know of one site grammarly https://app.grammarly.com/ . They can help you catch most mistakes.

The table of contents is a pretty important part of your book, but is not something you should make to soon. When I made my first book I made it too soon, and wasted a lot of time having to change it as I edited the rest of the book. The table of contents is something you should do last.

An ISBN number is a pretty important part of you book. Note: Most self-publishing operations will provide you with a free ISBN for both your print book and e-book but whatever operation provides you with the ISBN will be listed as the publisher.

There are many, many place you can self publish your book. I publish mine with Blurb www.blurb.com or .ca . But I have heard of other places such a lulu https://www.lulu.com/   or tellwell http://tellwell.ca/. And there are many more besides. What you got to do is find the one that suits your tastes. One you find the place you want to self publish your book just read their instructions.

I hope that I have helped you, and pray that your book will help others. There are many more pointers that I could have given you, but the last thing I will share with you is that you always have to be open to learning. Then you can learn all the other things that I could have told you, besides I think experience is better than any other pointers I could have given you. And make sure you are using your experience and talents for the glory of God.  ( N.C.R)

My Revised Psalms Book

I have good news! I have revised my Psalms book, Beautiful Psalms, and just today my son up-loaded it to Blurb, and then in a few days it will be available for sale on Amazon, as well as other places books are sold on-line. So that is exciting to me, and should be to you too!
When I first planned the Psalms book I felt it would be a really blessing to others, and would make a great gift for  your self or that someone in your life who needs encouragement . But my first edition ended up with some mistakes, and photos that was not quite clear. So I have made the necessary corrections, added different pictures, and now feel satisfied that it truly will be something special. Of course with self publishing and doing all the editing on my own, you will have to bear with me if it still is not 100 percent perfect.

Inspiring books

If you enjoy inspiring, and encouraging reading, here is some books for you!
The one on the left, Miracle For Jen, I read over a year ago. Wow, what a miracle alright! Jen suffered a sever brain injury from the very tragic accident her and her family her in when she was just 15 years old, but she came out victoriously!! And has a huge speaking ministry now through it called Hope Out Loud. How very wonderful to see God at work in her life!!

The other two books on Joni Eareckson Tada I just recently read. Another amazing story! I had heard a lot about Joni over the years, and about her great ministry she has going for the disabled called Joni and Friends. Joni goes international speaking and helping people all over the world. I had heard some of her messages on the Christian Radio Station. But I had never heard her whole story, and about her diving accident at the age of 17 that caused her to be paralyzed. And how she came to see the plan God had in her life through this accident. Powerful book!! The book of Joni and Ken is an awesome love story how Joni and her husband Ken beat the odds through her paraplegia, years of chronic pain, and then finally cancer, and made it trough stronger in each other and in God!! They have been married over 30 years now. A powerful love story!!

You can find these book on amazon.com.

 In Him, Mae

Update: I have  just recently received and am now reading, Pearls of Great Price,  a devotional book by Joni Eareckson Tada. Now that is great devotional!! Very deep and meaningful messages.

Prayer Journaling

Journaling prayers is a new one for me. I just  wish I had been doing much sooner.

I had heard of prayer journaling several years ago when I was just a young mom with our first couple of children; yet I never thought much of it or the benefits of journaling. And certainly never considered it for my self.
Since I never heard of doing that when I was growing up, it seemed rather odd to me to write down prayers. My first thoughts were, "Why would a person want do that for, and how would that help?" So I just passed it off.  What I had heard though from those doing it is that they found it very helpful, and really recommended it.

After reading a couple really good books on prayer this past year with both of the books talking about prayer journaling, I decided to give it a try for my self.

I bought a simple note book, labeled the front Mom's Prayer Journal, and began the new journey!!
I started with the month I was in and started writing all my prayer request I had for that month. I also put down a certain date at other times what I was praying  for that day. Besides writing prayer request I also write down my thankfulness to God for answered prayers.

That is what is really nice about prayer journaling is being able to look back at payers made and see the wondrous way God answered them and worked everything out! Journaling helps so that you don't forget what prayers requests you made, and so that you can clearly see God at work in your life through your payers and give God the credit for the answers. Also to be able to continue praying for certain things or issues, ect..., until there is an answer to your payers.

If prayer journaling is something new for you too, I encourage you to give it a try! I am sure you will love it, and be blessed by it as I am.

Below is a few books on prayer that I have read over last year that I have really enjoyed.

From Blog to Book!

About a year ago I had written a post about using our time and talents for God, and of my desire to write a couple of books. Well I have those mentioned books finished and successfully self published, and all ready for purchase. My book on Psalms called Beautiful Psalms I have already talked about it here earlier this summer.

But now I am very happy to announce my second book here!! The title is, As For Me and My House. It is written from all my years of posts here on my blog, well about half of the years anyway, the other half will come out in Volume Two which I am in the process of working on now. Yes, I am supper excited about this book written form my blog. If you have been enjoying and following my blog over the years, or even just recently came across it, I am sure will enjoy the book form of the blog. All the posts are right there conveniently in a book to read when ever and how ever you want, as often as you want! You can read one post a day more like a devotional, or several a day!! It is up to you.

Note though that I did not include every post. Like for instance the ones that were just about family news and happenings, or gardening and such. And I didn't include any of the pictures from the blog either. But I do have an up to date family photo of us in the back of the book on the page about the Author. So you will be able to enjoy that. Also in the back I included my favorite resources that have been a help and blessing to me as a wife and mother over the years.

Also I did some revising and editing of certain posts as needed to work better and sound better in the book. So if you read a post in the book, and then look for it here on the blog it may be worded some different. Also I have omitted certain posts that didn't seem as edifying as I thought they were when I first wrote them.

I chose the title for the book, As For Me and MY House, to better represent the book for what it is, because that is really what all these blog posts are about. It is about my journey as a wife and mother, and how we serve the Lord in our home. As for me and my house we will serve the Lord, and we will share that great news, our believes, and our faith and joy we have from that walk with the Lord with others!! But the title didn't really come from me, there is no way I could not have thought of that on my own. I had been praying about the title, and that is when that verse came to mind. And I was like, "Wow, what a wonderful title that will make!" God gets the glory for that!

As For Me and MY House, covers many topics such as: mothering and homeschooling issues, my thoughts and believes on many different things, verses that I love on different topics, things we have been dealing with as a family, praise poems I have written to God, and much more. Fellow wives and mothers should find it encouraging, inspiring, and challenging as you too walk with God!! And if you like this book, then be and sure to keep an out look for the up-coming volume two! Volume two will contain some of the very latest blog posts with new ones coming, as well as the older ones from this blog as well. It will contain a new and up-dated list of my favorite and helpful resources, as well as an up-dated family picture of us which should contain our newest baby. I hope to have this book completed and ready to release shortly after the new year, Lord Willing.

Well I hope you check out these books, purchase, and enjoy them! And please tell all your friends all about them as well!

Blessings, In Him Mae

P.S. Also in my near future writing projects I have a strong desire to write a Christian fiction. It will be a few short stories in one book. And the sole purpose of those stories will be to encourage, inspire, and challenge one in their walk with God. It will be geared to youth and young adult. I want it to be entertaining to read as well of course, or how else is one to be keep reading at the book and not tossing it out!! Anyway, Lord Willing I plan to get writing on this soon.

In His Steps ( book)

My oldest son just bought this book recently. ( he is always looking for great Christian books to purchase to read, plus for his own personal library one day) So I have borrowed his book and am enjoying it immensely! It is an old time classic, and is the adult version for the children's book, What would Jesus DO?. This is the book where the , " What would Jesus Do." saying has came from. Or better know today I suppose as WWJD.  One may wonder when in the world I would ever have time for reading so many books. I do not have a lot of time for sure. But I grab minuets here and there, especially when I am nursing my little one. And when I lie down some days after lunch for some quiet time. The only things I read is my Bible and great Christian books or literature.
This book is written about a pastor of a church that has pledged along with many of the church members for a year not to do any  thing without asking first, "What would Jesus do." And many of them are business people , ect..   So form that day on in all aspects and dealings concerning their  businesses and decisions they make, they ask the question, what would Jesus do? And things in their businesses and community begin to chance because of that pledge they made.
It seemed it was new for these people to bring God into every aspect of their lives though they had been professing Christian all along prior to this.

But that shouldn't be so should it? If we are truly living are lives completely for God, then all the time for as long as we live every thing we do should be centered around what Jesus would do and what His Will is for our lives. It shouldn't be something new to us, but it should be the norm, any thing else would be strange to us.
We need to always consider in everything What would Jesus do.
Here is a few examples.
~ Would Jesus watch or want us to watch this movie, TV show, ect...?
~ Would Jesus use His time this way?
~ Would Jesus use His money this way?
~ Would Jesus read this book or magazine?
~ Would He hang out at a place like this?
~ Would Jesus listen to this kind of music?

A lot of time I think things are done with out a lot of time considering this because I guess we get the mind set that these things really don't matter, but if we stop and take a moment to think about it, we know the answer in our hearts.  Proverbs 3:6 "In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths."                                                                                     And all these things do matter. God wants every little detail of our lives to be after His Will. He wants us walk after His steps.
1 John 2:6 " He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked."

May this be an encouragement to you today, as you mother your children and walk after God.

Mae

Louie Giglio ( Passion Talk Series DVD set)

I was recently given this DVD set as a gift. We watch them together as  a family. So far we have only managed to watch the first two. We really enjoyed them. I do not know how the rest will be, but I imagine that will be just as good. He is great speaker, and really holds your attention. The first DVD was really amazing as Louie describes our Milky Way Galaxy and how great our God is in His perfect creation of the stars and planets, and how small we are. You would just have see it know what I mean. It was very well done.
I am enjoying the gift of this DVD set very much.  And now I have just placed and order for this exact set for a family member. I found it on www.amazon.ca  for $58.00. There you can view the DVDs and read what all they are about.
I am sure there is web-site as well where you could learn more about Louie Giglio and the Passion Talk ministry. I do not personally know anything of Louie or Passion Talk only this DVD set, and the first 2 of the DVDs we watched. Might be wise to check that out if one is interested.

A Woman After God's Heart

A woman After God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George
The latest book I am reading. And what a treasure it is!!

Elizabeth George shares practical, scriptural insights on how you can pursue God's priorities concerning:

~ Your husband - - foster a deep commitment to serve and honor him.

~ Your children -- pray faithfully for them and teach them God's Word.

~ Your home -- create a nurturing atmosphere and a tapestry of beauty

~ Your walk with the Lord -- grow through love of Scripture and in discipleship

~ Your ministry -- learn to reach out and become an encourager

Only wished I had found this book years ago. I am certain it would have been a tremendous help thus far in my parenting and marriage, and walk with the Lord.

Another book I have read several years ago and loved, was the book called The Power of a Praying Wife, by Storime Omartian. It was very good too. And I found it to be very helpful. I have read and reread it!

Also early on in my parenting when we just had 2 and my oldest was about 3 years old, a longtime friend put me on the mailing list for the Above Rubies magazines. Now that has to be the greatest thing that has impacted my mothering and being a wife. I am ever grateful for the Above Rubies ministries by Nancy Campbell, and the magazines she puts out. The encouragement and inspiration in those magazines have really kept me going as a wife and mother. I have gleaned so much form her. I also have been able to attend 3 Above Rubies ladies retreats and got to hear Nancy Campbell speak. And now I have the very great privilege to be part of organizing an Above Rubies ladies retreat in my area of Alberta!! I am so excited! It is only 2 months away now to be held June 5th-7th, 2015. I praise the Lord for making it all possible!!

Nancy Campbell has written several books and teaching manuals as well as the magazine too. Two of hers that I have and love are The Power of Motherhood, and The Gate Keeper of The Home. These are the kind of books that you want to have on your bed stand to reread and refresh your memory from time to time. Nancy's husband Collin has written a very great book for men called, Where Are the Real Men of God, which we have as well and my husband has read to the family during our devotional time

I believe God has given us all the information we need for being the great Godly wives and mothers that we need to be and He wants us to be, right in His Word the BIBLE. But some good godly authors do a really great job of bring all those goodies out of the Bible, making it easier for us to read and grasp and to put into practice. And I thank the Lord for these authors like the ones I have mentioned above that have read and researched their Bibles deeply about the topics of mothering and marriage and have took time to write these books.

May we all diligently seek and desire to be a woman after God's own.
 In Him, Mae

What he must be if he want's to marry my duaghter

What He Must Be . . . If He Wants to Marry My Daughter  I Just ordered this book from www.christianbook.com
I have read a few chapters and have found it pretty good so far.
Of course I only have 2 very young daughters so I am truly thinking in advance here, but it is also good in preparing your sons for what they need to be for marriage. And we have 5 sons in the growing!
Just passing on information about this book to you all.

A theological explanation for Voddie Baucham's suitor requirements, as well as a collection of practical advice, What He Must Be... is organized around the five "musts" of what any Christian man should be before getting married. Hitting two sides of the coin, this book is designed to be a manual for readying fathers and daughters, as well as a manual for training sons to become men worthy of marrying. He spends time addressing the importance of marriage for Christians; the need for fathers to become patriarchs willing to be sensitive to-and protective of-their daughters; the dangers of feminism; ways to lead selflessly and with love; the importance of valuing children as a blessing; and a number of other elements crucial to a successful courtship and marriage. 213 pages, softcover.

A Heart For God

My newest read is a book called, A Heart For God, written by John Coblentz.
And I am thoroughly enjoying it!

Here is a little about the book that is written on the back cover.

" The heart is a marvelous thing."
" It is created by God, for God. It has longings and desires and out of those, man responds. Our heart was designed to  worship God.
However, sin damages our hearts, deadens our conscience, darkens our understanding and mind and warps our desires. It enslaves the will, clouds our judgement and alienates us from God.
Then there is cleansing. Through repentance, confession, acquaintance and fellowship with God, the heart is changed and recreated into the likeness of Him who loved and died for us. Now we have a new and clean heart with new desires and longings. One that is changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord. Through having a love for Truth and experiencing God's love  in our hearts we can have A Heart For God."

"This book is written for those who love light and are willing to expose their hearts to God and man. It is written on a scriptural basis with clear outlines with an easy reading style. The reader will be challenged, inspired, instructed, and changed into a vessel that is fit to bring glory and honor to Christ's kingdom."

A heart after God's own heart, and a vessel fit to bring God glory, is what I so long for in my life.
 How about you?

Mae

The Other Parent

The Other Parent: The Inside Story of the Media's Effect On Our ChildrenThe Other Parent: The Inside Story of the Media's Effect On Our Children
 Overview:
Kids must have special rules. It is more than naive to pretend that the market alone will protect them. We recognize this in virtually every sphere of life. Yet in the media, we have stripped away the very rules created to protect them, leaving them almost entirely to the profit-driven manipulations of the free market.

James P. Steyer's explosive investigation into how the media affects our children is a groundbreaking book that will shock most parents. Through songs on the radio, Internet access, television, and movies, our kids are learning how to live in an adult world long before they are ready. They are besieged on a daily basis by images of sex, commercialism, and violence via such mainstream programming as Dawson's Creek, films such as American Pie and The Matrix, and computer games such as Doom and Quake. "This is the new media reality," Steyer states, "and it is one most parents are not prepared for."

Steyer examines how we have allowed media to bombard our children's lives and he offers practical advice on countering the incessant parade of images that frighten, intrigue, and influence America's kids:
· Finding alternative activities for them besides television and the Internet
· Putting your kids on a media diet
·
Discovering what they think about the commercials, programs, and music they encounter on a daily basis
·
Organizing advocacy groups, contacting government leaders, and boycotting media outlets that target children with inappropriate content.

The Other Parent is a powerful and provocative book about the media's incredible impact on our families and our society.

Examines how we have allowed media to bombard our children's lives and offers practical advice on countering the incessant parade of images that frighten, intrigue, and influence America's kids.

I have just recently purchased this book, and am currently in the process of  reading it, just in the first few chapters yet.  We don't have a T.V. in our home, so we really don't have any issues with this.
But it is defiantly an eye opener of what is out there in the Media world. And how the media world is controlled, and how T.V. and movies are rated.  Good to know this stuff, and what to watch out for. Even if one does not have a T.V., there is the Internet, video games, music and so on.
It's not like I didn't know about all of this stuff and the dangers of the media world, but is good to be reminded. And I did learn a lot I didn't know.
I highly recommend this to other parents.

In Him,
Mae

I have just recently purchased this book.  And of course I was buying it with my dear husband in mind.   I though jump right into it to see what good things it held, and what great inspiration my hubby would be reading!!  I loved it right off!  I was like you so need to read this!  :)  And he did start to read it, but he doesn't have a lot of time to read and after a couple weeks still had not made much of a progress in it. ( I read more than that in a couple hours! lol!! )   So I prayed about it really fervently one night, just praying very diligently that God would put it on his heart to put it top priority to read, because to me it had some good powerful stuff in there that he so needed to hear.
Well guess what happened. Just that next evening preparing for family devotional time, my dear hubby suggested  that  we read the book  together, Where Are the Real Men of God, since we had just finished the other devotional book we were using.
I was like, "Wow, this an answer to prayer, and a very quick answer at that.'!  I was not expecting my prayer to be answered that quickly, nor in that fashion.  But that suited me just fine, cause it was something I thought our  teen son should  read too.  Talk about the awesome power of prayer!!

We have been reading it during our family devotion time now all of this week. And it has been so good, and such a good and meaningful time spent together as a family. Great discussions have come up from it.  Not sure if all the content though is exactly child friendly though since it is geared for men. We may have to skip a part or so if it is not. So I could not recommend it for a family devotion.
But I do recommend it for sure for all husbands, dads, and men.  And I do think it is nice for both wives and husbands alike. It is wake up for both for sure. We all ( both husbands and wives ) are guilty of being a wimp from time to time I believe.

May we all stand strong for God, and His word. And not be wimpy!!

Gate- Keepers of the Home

I just recently bought and read this study manual by Nancy Campbell.
 And I absolutely love it!!
And I totally recommend it to all parents. It is geared more for moms, but I believe the role of gate keeping and guarding your home from evil is a mandate for both mom and dad. It takes two to really make an effect I believe. If mom and dad are divided  on this issue then it makes it hard for the kids to respect and obey the rules, and respect why some things are just not allowed in the home. It was refreshing to read this. The very things I have been feeling in my heart from God, and learning from the Bible.  We need to stand strong at the gates of our home, guarding from all evil creeping into our homes that tear apart our families and our godly standards.
