The Other Parent

The Other Parent: The Inside Story of the Media's Effect On Our ChildrenThe Other Parent: The Inside Story of the Media's Effect On Our Children
 Overview:
Kids must have special rules. It is more than naive to pretend that the market alone will protect them. We recognize this in virtually every sphere of life. Yet in the media, we have stripped away the very rules created to protect them, leaving them almost entirely to the profit-driven manipulations of the free market.

James P. Steyer's explosive investigation into how the media affects our children is a groundbreaking book that will shock most parents. Through songs on the radio, Internet access, television, and movies, our kids are learning how to live in an adult world long before they are ready. They are besieged on a daily basis by images of sex, commercialism, and violence via such mainstream programming as Dawson's Creek, films such as American Pie and The Matrix, and computer games such as Doom and Quake. "This is the new media reality," Steyer states, "and it is one most parents are not prepared for."

Steyer examines how we have allowed media to bombard our children's lives and he offers practical advice on countering the incessant parade of images that frighten, intrigue, and influence America's kids:
· Finding alternative activities for them besides television and the Internet
· Putting your kids on a media diet
·
Discovering what they think about the commercials, programs, and music they encounter on a daily basis
·
Organizing advocacy groups, contacting government leaders, and boycotting media outlets that target children with inappropriate content.

The Other Parent is a powerful and provocative book about the media's incredible impact on our families and our society.

Examines how we have allowed media to bombard our children's lives and offers practical advice on countering the incessant parade of images that frighten, intrigue, and influence America's kids.

I have just recently purchased this book, and am currently in the process of  reading it, just in the first few chapters yet.  We don't have a T.V. in our home, so we really don't have any issues with this.
But it is defiantly an eye opener of what is out there in the Media world. And how the media world is controlled, and how T.V. and movies are rated.  Good to know this stuff, and what to watch out for. Even if one does not have a T.V., there is the Internet, video games, music and so on.
It's not like I didn't know about all of this stuff and the dangers of the media world, but is good to be reminded. And I did learn a lot I didn't know.
I highly recommend this to other parents.

Mae

Where Are the Real Men of God?

Where Are The Real Men of God?

Exposing the Wimpy Spirit!by Colin Campbell

Designed to be used personally or as a group study manual, the questions at the end of each chapter will provoke you to examine yourself and to spark discussions together. Suggestions for prayer are also included.

Every man, old or young, married or single, needs to read this book -- if they are brave enough. It is on the cutting edge of what God wants to say to men in this 21st century.

Colin Campbell has an anointed message for men. As a pastor and father for over 30 years, Colin is well qualified to bring this much need message to the men willing to hear what God has to says in His word about living in Biblical Manhood.

I have just recently purchased this book.  And of course I was buying it with my dear husband in mind.   I though jump right into it to see what good things it held, and what great inspiration my hubby would be reading!!  I loved it right off!  I was like you so need to read this!  :)  And he did start to read it, but he doesn't have a lot of time to read and after a couple weeks still had not made much of a progress in it. ( I read more than that in a couple hours! lol!! )   So I prayed about it really fervently one night, just praying very diligently that God would put it on his heart to put it top priority to read, because to me it had some good powerful stuff in there that he so needed to hear.
Well guess what happened. Just that next evening preparing for family devotional time, my dear hubby suggested  that  we read the book  together, Where Are the Real Men of God, since we had just finished the other devotional book we were using.
I was like, "Wow, this an answer to prayer, and a very quick answer at that.'!  I was not expecting my prayer to be answered that quickly, nor in that fashion.  But that suited me just fine, cause it was something I thought our  teen son should  read too.  Talk about the awesome power of prayer!!

We have been reading it during our family devotion time now all of this week. And it has been so good, and such a good and meaningful time spent together as a family. Great discussions have come up from it.  Not sure if all the content though is exactly child friendly though since it is geared for men. We may have to skip a part or so if it is not. So I could not recommend it for a family devotion.
But I do recommend it for sure for all husbands, dads, and men.  And I do think it is nice for both wives and husbands alike. It is wake up for both for sure. We all ( both husbands and wives ) are guilty of being a wimp from time to time I believe.

May we all stand strong for God, and His word. And not be wimpy!!

Mae

Gate- Keepers of the Home

I just recently bought and read this study manual by Nancy Campbell.
 And I absolutely love it!!
And I totally recommend it to all parents. It is geared more for moms, but I believe the role of gate keeping and guarding your home from evil is a mandate for both mom and dad. It takes two to really make an effect I believe. If mom and dad are divided  on this issue then it makes it hard for the kids to respect and obey the rules, and respect why some things are just not allowed in the home. It was refreshing to read this. The very things I have been feeling in my heart from God, and learning from the Bible.  We need to stand strong at the gates of our home, guarding from all evil creeping into our homes that tear apart our families and our godly standards.

You will be very blessed and encouraged!

The Greatest gift ever

This is the time of lots of gift giving and receiving for those who celebrate Christmas.
And thinking of gifts and such, has made me think of the greatest gift that can ever be given and received.
It can not be bought with money, it will never wear out, never be used up, or  get old.
Sounds good right?

It is a gift that only God  can give.
 The gift of eternal life.
And He is given it freely to all who will believe on Him.
All we have to do is  receive it.
Beautiful isn't?!!

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish , but have everlasting life.

 Romans 6: 22-23
22 ) But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

               Ephesians 2:8
    8)  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:      9) Not of works, lest any man should boast .

In  all of the gifts you have received, if this one is not among them, then I encourage you to receive it now. It is the greatest gift you will ever be given!
And if this gift is not among the gifts you have given your children yet, well it's not to late. Of course you your self can not give them the gift of eternal life, only God can do that. But you can give them Jesus. You can bring Jesus into their lives.  And through Jesus they also can receive the gift of eternal life

In Him,
Mae

~ Jesus our Hope ~

Jesus.......
The Son of God  born in a manger.
Died on the cross for our sins.
Rose again, and ascended back up to heaven.
Who now reigns on the throne with the Father.

Jesus......
Who was sent by the Father to be the sacrifice for our sins.
The One who  gives us life.
 Through Him we have hope.
By Him we are saved.
Our  Saviour, Healer and protector!

Thanking Jesus today for giving me hope, and life eternal!

In Him,
Mae

a great poster for your teens

I have this  list on a little poster on my fridge titled Teen Commandments. I thought them pretty good,  so I wanted to share it with you all.

1.  Don' let your parents down; they brought you up

2.  Choose your companions with care, you become what they are.

3.  Be master of your habits; or they will master you.

4.  Treasure your time; don't spend it; invest it.

5. Stand for something; or you'll fall for anything.

6.  Select only a date; who would make a good mate.

7.  See what you can do for others; not what they can do for you.

8.  Guard your thoughts; what you think, you are.

9. Don't fill up on this world's crumbs; feed your soul on the Living Bread.

10.  Give your all to Christ; He gave His all for you.

Hope you have enjoyed them too.  You may want to print them off and make a poster for your fridge or wall.

Mae
